Animal Rebellion UK putting vegan activism around the globe to shame

Yvonne O'Halloran

Animal Rebellion UK are taking big steps to advertise their herbivorous agenda. If you haven’t already read about their plans to stop the supply of dairy, or don’t even know who they are then click here to read an intro article.

They have launched a campaign called “Plant-based futures” and have been travelling around the UK to give talks on why they believe the government should assist in adapting the food system to become vegan. They argue for the sake of feeding the hungry and the health of the planet. Moving footage of their reasons can be found online.

They have already started up a social media storm with members going into UK supermarkets and department stores to wreak havoc. They have been pouring milk onto shopfloors, removing all milk from shop shelves and occupying dairy isles with placards. This is just the start, as their official action for stopping the supply of dairy is set to commence in September.

Whilst it may sound extreme to those who are not quite onboard with civil resistance, their due diligence is highly persuasive. They are setting out to achieve over 1000 arrests in a short span of time, followed by a large-scale occupation of London. This will ensure that the vegan movement is impossible to ignore and will make multiple mainstream news headlines.

For those who think this is a bad idea… just think about the fact that this scale of vegan activism will make history. There was a time when vegans were considered virtually insane. Now the space has opened so vastly that many people are accepting of the cause. Us vegans know that our diet is better for the planet, and whilst extreme actions like this might not magically convert the public, it will certainly grab their attention.

This plan also further highlights a shift in perspective by demonstrating just how far the vegan movement has come to even consider challenging the UK government.

Furthermore, Animal Rebellion seek to engage with those who are reliant on animal agriculture as a means of living. They argue that the government are funnelling support and money into a sinking ship which will leave these workers destitute when there means of production inevitably collapse. From this, their first demand is that the government invest in these workers and their transition.

Their second major demand is that the government use freed up land to rewild the UK. They argue that with the increased efficiency of a plant-based food system, less land will be needed to supply more food, and as such, this land can be given back to nature and assist in stabilising our increasingly fragile climate.

We would love to hear what you think here at Living Vegan, and whether you can see vegans elsewhere in the world stepping up to challenge their governments for a plant-based future.
