Sir Paul McCartney urges UK government to remove meat from schools
Sir Paul McCartney’s Meat Free Monday organisation is supporting PETA’s new campaign to remove mandatory servings of meat and dairy from school menus in the UK to allow schools to meet children’s nutrition requirements in whatever way they choose. PETA’s campaign is backed by others including MP’s, environmental organisations and animal protection groups.
According to PETA, In England, schools are required to serve a portion of dairy every day, a portion of meat at least three times a week, and a portion of fish once every three weeks. These requirements are out of step with public health advice, are damaging to the environment, and cause animals pain and suffering.
Paul, Mary, and Stella McCartney said in support of the campaign:
“No one needs to eat meat, so it shouldn’t be mandatory to serve it in schools. It’s time to revise the School Food Standards to help the planet, spare animals, and promote healthy eating.”
The food standards are so outdated that they “don’t even comply with the governments own nutritional advice to the public- the Eatwell Guide- which recommends people consume more legumes and lentils and reduce their consumption of red and processed meats” PETA has stated.
The petition has also been signed by supporters such as Veganuary, Viva!, Quorn Foods, Compassion in World Farming, Plant-Based Health Professionals UK, Humane Society International UK, Animal Aid, ProVeg UK, Caroline Lucas MP, and Henry Smith MP, among others. To sign the petition click here.
