Cochrane study demonstrates that reducing saturated fat reduces the risk of Cardiovascular disease by 21%
One of the most respected research groups in the world- The Cochrane Database, has found that excess saturated fat increases the risk for myocardial infarction, stroke, and coronary heart disease events.
The review included 15 Randomised Controlled Trials with 59,000 people. The key findings were that the reduction of saturated fat for about 2 years resulted in a decreased risk for a cardiovascular event by 21%. If the amount of saturated fat was almost eliminated, this would reduce even further. The paper recommended the best replacements for saturated fat in the diet was with polyunsaturated fats, or carbohydrates.
Leading cardiologist Joel Kahn, MD stated that saturated fat should be ‘off the menu’ as it causes heart disease. In his recent interview with Plant Based News, Kahn talks about the results from the study, stating that the confusion is now over and that saturated fat is not healthy, and never was.
He talks about where the confusion about saturated fats came from stating “We have had major magazines [like] Time Magazine ‘butter is back’ [and] New York Times ‘butter is healthy’ and it reads like a spy novel”.
He goes onto say “[Dairy] is a struggling industry striving to confuse the public like the tobacco industry did for so many decades” and that “there’s money in the dairy industry, there’s money in the beef industry” and this is why they are fighting back so hard to cover up the truth.
