105 countries commit to ending deforestation by 2030

The UN Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26) hosted between October 31st and November 12th saw world leaders gather to sign the Glasgow Lwaders’ Decleratuon on Forest and Land Use.

Part of the agreement is that they must work collectively to reverse land degredation and promote restoration. Agricultural companies are being pushed to limit their role in driving forest clearing. Brazil, Canada, France, Chile , Russia, the U.S the UK and Australia were some of the countries who committed to the plan.

10 unnamed companies with shares in beef, soy, cocao and palm oil production also agreed to half deforestation. The UN has not yet revealed which companies joined the declaration. Furthermore, within the UK, 30 CEO’s of large agricultural companies have agreed to assist in reforestation efforts.

This pledge comes at a good time to motivate countries to meet their prior commitments that were establised by the Paris Agreement that aimed to prevent the world from warming a further 1.5 degrees celsius.

The UN released a ‘Code Red’ along with the 2021 IPCC report, highlighting the rapidly worsening conditions that link animal agriculture with deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

“[The report] is a Code Red for humanity,” Guterres said. “The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.”
