1.5 million people are eating more plant-based foods in South Korea

The Korean Vegetarian Union (KVU) has revealed new stats showing that there are now about 500,000 strict vegans in South Korea with a total of 1.5 million people choosing more plant-based foods.

Often dubbed the ‘vegan revolution’, Lee Won-bok, who runs the KVU, exclaimed that a plant-based lifestyle is growing in popularity in South Korea.

Speaking to The Korea Herald, he stated: “More people are interested in a healthy diet, and the awareness on animal rights and for a clean environment is also growing,”

Indeed, the number of vegans in South Korea has tripled from 10 years ago, when I started this union.”

Won-Bok also revealed that more and more people are choosing to adopt ‘flexitarian’ lifestyles, whereby they reduce their consumption of animal products in favour of plant-based alternatives.

The KVU has estimated that around 20 percent of the South Korean population is now following this new ‘flexitarian’ lifestyle.

This, alongside the growing popularity of veganism in South Korea, is a huge step for the vegan movement. As more people choose plant-based alternatives the demand increases and in turn the demand for the animal-based counterparts reduces. This is great news for both the animals and for the environment.
