Meet the plant-based yogis that are changing the online yoga game

Yvonne O'Halloran

Since the start of the pandemic, many of us turned to online yoga for mental and physical well-being. For newcomers, the internet was bountiful with resources that could help you get a foot in. For the seasoned yogi, you may have struggled to find videos that truly challenged you or gave sufficient attention to the most important parts of yoga, breathwork and meditation.

Bre and Flo are a couple that take the phrase “couple goals” to a whole new level with their cleverly named YouTube channel, Breathe and Flow.  Their online content truly allows students, at all phases of their yogic journey, to create a balanced practice and reach advance stages.

So, what’s so special about them? Bre and Flo constantly remind us that there is more to yoga than being able to do difficult poses with our bodies. They accentuate the importance of staying in touch with your breathe, meditating and listening to your body. By focusing on awareness, the progression of your practice is made safer. The main goal here is to feel good, not to look good. As there are two of them, they are able to create more content for a wider audience and often post tutorials that dissect different poses to ensure that they are done properly.

Whilst looking good is not an essential point of yoga, you may feel that it’s hard to push yourself physically with most online yoga classes. This is where Bre and Flo really have us covered. They offer a great variation of advanced practices to make even the strongest of us drip with sweat and fall into the deepest of śavāsanas. Despite having videos that many would consider an intense form of exercise, they never fail to remind us that this is not what yoga is about, with a large amount of their content devoted solely to meditation or the practice of Yin. Yin yoga is a type of yoga where poses are held for long periods of time, encouraging us to slow down and reach a deep meditative state throughout our practice.

They also provide us with a lot of useful resources which can be found on their website, including 30 day calendars of yoga journeys for beginner, intermediate and advanced yogis, information about retreats, meditation, nutrition, pregnancy yoga and so much more!

They advocate eating a plant-based diet as compatible with making yoga a lifestyle, whereby plant-based foods offer many nutritional benefits. With the belief that food is medicine for the mind, body and soul, they call us to bring awareness to how our diets make us feel and to search for what works for us as individuals.

Online yoga is unable to supply us with an intimate student-teacher relationship or the shared energy of attending an in-person class. For those of us who are fortunate enough to possess technology, it allows us to learn for free no matter where in the world we reside. If you are looking for high quality instruction and progress with your practice, look no further than Breathe and Flow.
