British Airways is the latest carrier to introduce a plant-based menu

British Airways has introduced a plant-based menu in its first-and-business lounges to reduce its carbon footprint, and cater to increasing demand.

BA joins the growing band of businesses catering to plant-based consumers. Qatar airways has just made available a selection of vegan dishes for its business class passengers. Onboard some of the dishes to sample, with no pre-order, are celeriac steak, Mediterranean risotto, and steamed seasonal veggies.

Delta in the US has introduced five plant-based options for its Delta One- and First-Class customers. Budget airline EasyJet has also added vegan options, according to the vegconomist.

Since 2018, Cathay Pacific has been serving Beyond Burgers in its Pier First Class Lounge, and other vegan dishes onboard.

BA said it is also working to remove single-use plastic across the airline, and all plastic water bottles in Heathrow lounges are being replaced with glass, which will be rolled out across UK lounges.

“We want to create an even better British Airways…with things like alternative menus, reducing plastics and introducing new technology,” said Tom Stevens, BA director of brand customer experience.

Foodies will be happy to know that BA’s plant offering includes a burger.

The new menus will initially roll out across the airline’s Heathrow lounges, before appearing in the US.

BA is commited to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The carrier launched its BA Better World sustainability programme last September.

The airline is committed to zero carbon by 2050. This includes improving operational efficiency, through investing in aircraft, funding carbon offset, and removal projects to mitigate emissions on UK domestic flights. And progressively introducing sustainable aviation fuels using waste feedstocks.

The carrier says in the medium to long-term it is continuing to invest in the development and scale up of sustainable fuel, and looking at how it can accelerate the growth of new technologies such as zero emissions hydrogen-powered aircraft and carbon capture technology.
