A vegan diet may help treat rheumatoid arthritis

A plant-based diet could ease joint pain for the millions around the world who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, a new but small study shows.

“A plant-based diet could be the prescription to alleviate joint pain for millions of people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

 “And all the side effects, including weight loss and lower cholesterol are only beneficial,” says Neal Barnard, MD, lead author of the study.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a common autoimmune disease which affects some 14 million globally. It produces swelling and joint damage.

The study by researchers at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine said participants were asked at the start of the study to rate their pain.

During the study the 44 adults diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were assigned to a group with a vegan diet for four weeks and an unrestricted diet.

Researchers found that those eating a vegan diet saw the pain in their swollen joints decrease from 7 to 3.3, while those who ate and unrestricted diet saw no pain relief.

Participants on the vegan diet were also able to lower their dose of pain medication.

In addition, the research showed that body weigh decreased by an average 14 lbs on the vegan diet, compared to a gain of 2 lb on the unrestricted one.

For the plant-eaters cholesterol dropped too.

The study was published in the scientific journal American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine and consisted of 44 adults .

This latest study joins a growing body of work pointing to the positive effects of a vegan diet in alleviating many kinds of health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.

Studies have even shown that people who consume a plant-based diet may live longer too! Just eating pulses three times a week, notes one study, can add years to your life.

Make sure to eat organic, fresh, and as little processed foods as possible for radiant health.
