5 tips for travelling as a vegan

Yvonne O'Halloran

It’s easy to focus on the challenges of maintaining a vegan diet while travelling. Indeed, you may find it challenging to find options that cater to your dietary needs. But, in reality, as the world continues to evolve and become more conscious of the impact we have on the environment, it’s never been a more exciting time to travel as a vegan. With a rise in plant-based restaurants and options around the world, it’s easier than ever to experience new cultures and cuisines without sacrificing your values.

From vegan street food in Thailand to Michelin-rated vegan restaurants in London, the possibilities are endless. And it’s not just about food – eco-friendly accommodations and sustainable tourism practices are also on the rise. As a vegan traveller, you can make a positive impact on the planet while also satisfying your wanderlust. In this blog, we’ll give you five tips on how to travel as a vegan so you can make the most out of your adventure while staying true to your values.

Do Your Research

Before you head out to your destination, make sure to research the vegan food options available in the area. You can use apps like HappyCow or Yelp to find vegan-friendly restaurants, shops, and cafes nearby. You can also search for vegan Facebook groups or pages that can provide you with tips on where to find vegan food in the area. Doing your research ahead of time can save you a lot of time and help you avoid the disappointment of not finding vegan-friendly options when you get there.

Bring Snacks

You never know when you’ll get hungry, especially when you’re out and about exploring a new city or country. That’s why it’s always a good idea to pack some vegan snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day. Items like nuts, seeds, energy bars, and fruit are great choices for travelling vegans. These snacks are easy to pack and can save you from going hungry when there’s no vegan option in sight.

Learn The Local Language

One of the most challenging aspects of travelling as a vegan is communicating your dietary needs to locals who may not understand your language. Learning a few key phrases or terms in the local language can make a huge difference. For example, learning how to say “I am a vegan” or “Does this contain meat or dairy?” in the local language can be very helpful. It shows that you are respectful of the local culture and trying to make an effort to communicate your dietary needs.

Stay in Self-Catered Accommodation

One of the best ways to ensure that you have access to vegan-friendly meals during your travels is to stay in accommodations with kitchenettes. It allows you to cook your food and experiment with local produce, spices, and flavours. This can be a fun and exciting way to immerse yourself in the local culture, learn new recipes, and save money on food expenses.

Be Open-Minded

Finally, one of the essential things you can do is to be open-minded. Not every country, region, or city will have an abundance of vegan options. However, there may still be traditional dishes or locally-sourced produce that you can enjoy. Keep an open mind, try new foods, and enjoy your travels. Remember that travelling as a vegan is not about perfection but about making conscious choices that align with your values. The key is to stay true to yourself while immersing yourself in new cultures and experiences.
