Going vegan crucial to help with the climate crisis & future pandemic prevention according to report

Yvonne O'Halloran

Researchers have found evidence that going plant-based has a significant effect on the climate change crisis, protecting ecosystems and reducing the risk of future pandemics.

The report from policy institute Chatham House concluded that the greatest thing we can do to look after the natural world is by seeking to change our global food system.

Furthermore, the report outlines three ways to do this: a mass shift towards plant-based diets, setting aside more land for protected natural habitats and switching to more sustainable farming methods that support biodiversity.

The researchers also pointed out that shifting towards plant-based diets on a large scale lowers the risk of disease being passed on from animals to humans and triggering a future pandemic.

As we have seen since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, our food system is in need of reform, not only for the planet but also the wellbeing of all of its inhabitants.

Philip Lymbery, Global Chief Executive at Compassion in World Farming stated: “At a time when so much of the world continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s never been more obvious that the well-being of people and animals, wild and farmed, are intertwined,”

He goes on to say: “As this new report shows, the future of humanity depends on us living in harmony with nature. We need to work with nature, not against her. Never has it been so timely for us to realise that protecting people means protecting animals too.”
